Google Tag Manager (GTM) in Hummerce is a module that loads a Google Tag Manager container on the store's pages and feeds it store data in the data layer (dataLayer). This means new marketing tags - Google Analytics 4, ad pixels, chats, partner scripts - are added and configured in the Google panel, with no separate development request for every script.
Core platform feature - available in all current Hummerce versions; data layer in Google Analytics 4 format since version 2.30. Last updated: 2026-09-29.
¶ Benefits and use cases
- One container for all marketing tools - Google Analytics 4, Facebook Pixel and Conversions API in Hummerce, chats, partner scripts. Adding or changing a tag happens in the Google panel, with no development request.
- A ready-made e-commerce data layer - view, cart, order and purchase events are available right away for the GA4 tag - see Google Analytics 4 - Full Sales Funnel, No Code.
- Preview mode before publishing - changes in the container can be tested on the store before they reach every customer.
- Data layer variables available for any tag - e.g. a product symbol or order value can be passed to a partner's script with no changes to the store's code.
- Compliance with cookie consent mode - tags can wait for the customer's consent in a chosen category, see Google Analytics 4 - Full Sales Funnel, No Code.
- The store doesn't send data directly to external services - it places it in the data layer (dataLayer), from which GTM, according to its own configuration, passes it on.
- The data layer version is set in the panel: Google Analytics 4 (current, full e-commerce event set - see Google Analytics 4 - Full Sales Funnel, No Code) or Universal Analytics (a discontinued format, replaced by GA4).
- Data layer variables (e.g. a product symbol, order value) can be used in any tag in the container, not only the analytics tag.
- Besides Google Analytics 4, GTM can also run Facebook Pixel and Conversions API in Hummerce - as an alternative to running it directly from the store template - plus other marketing and partner scripts, each as a separate tag with its own trigger rule.
- Adding or changing a tag happens in the Google Tag Manager console, with a preview mode before changes are published - with no request to change the store's code. A code change is only needed when a new tag requires data that isn't yet in the data layer.
- Tags run by GTM can wait for the customer's cookie consent in a chosen category (Consent Mode v2), handled by a consent management platform (CMP) connected in the container. The consent rules and the differences between the BS4/BS5 templates are described in Google Analytics 4 - Full Sales Funnel, No Code.
- The GTM container can also run server-side, in Google Cloud infrastructure, instead of only in the customer's browser - this reduces the impact of ad blockers and privacy-focused browsers on the collected data and can shorten page load time.
- This is an extension implemented individually and quoted separately - it requires its own hosting infrastructure in Google Cloud, maintained independently of the standard store implementation.
- The Google Tag Manager module - a core platform feature, available in all current versions.
- The data layer in Google Analytics 4 format - since version 2.30 (before that, the store only worked with the now-discontinued Universal Analytics format).
- Requires implementation - the container must be set up on a Google account and configured in the store panel (container ID, data layer version).
- Minimum estimated time:
- What the time depends on:
- the number and type of tags to configure,
- the state of the existing container - a new container is simplest, cleaning up many old tags takes more work,
- choosing and configuring a consent management platform (CMP),
- server-side GTM - quoted separately.
- The store doesn't create tags in the Google Tag Manager console itself - that's work in the Google panel, outside the store panel.
- Without a correctly configured container, no tag - including GA4 - sends any data.
- The Universal Analytics format is discontinued - new implementations only use the GA4 data layer format.
- Not every external script with many variables can be connected through GTM without extra data layer variable configuration.
- We do not verify the configuration for legal compliance - the cookie policy content and the choice of consent categories are up to the store.
- Server-side GTM as a standard part of implementation, not only an extension on request.
- Ready-made container configuration templates for the most commonly implemented marketing tools.
Does Hummerce support Google Tag Manager?
Yes. The module loads a GTM container on the store's pages and feeds it data in the data layer (dataLayer).
Can tools other than Google Analytics be run through Google Tag Manager?
Yes. GTM is one container for many tags - e.g. Facebook Pixel, chats or partner scripts - each configured in the Google panel, with no changes to the store's code.
Does adding a new tag require a development request?
Usually not. The tag and its trigger rule are configured in the Google Tag Manager console. A code change in the store is only needed for new data in the data layer.
Does Hummerce work with Universal Analytics?
No. That's a discontinued Google format, replaced by Google Analytics 4. The GA4 data layer is available since version 2.30.
How long does setting up Google Tag Manager take?
Basic configuration (container ID, data layer version) - from 1 h. The time to configure individual tags depends on the integration they belong to.
Do tags run through GTM respect the customer's cookie consent?
Yes, when consent mode is configured - the tag then waits for the customer's consent in the chosen category.

- Panel configuration: Configuration -> Settings, group Google Tag Manager:
- Turn on Google Tag Manager - enabled by default,
- Client ID - the GTM container ID (GTM-...),
- DataLayer version - "Universal Analytics" or "Google Analytics 4",
- GTM script URL - a custom GTM load address (e.g. a server-side variant); works in the BS4 template,
- Track Internal Promotions - banner tracking in the BS4 template, disabled by default; in BS5, slider banners are always tracked,
- consent settings and the wait time for a consent update - the same settings group, see Google Analytics 4 - Full Sales Funnel, No Code.
- Google Tag Manager console (tagmanager.google.com): tags, trigger rules and variables, preview mode, publishing changes - outside the store panel.
¶ REST API and MCP
Google Tag Manager configuration has no separate REST API or AI assistant (MCP) operations - settings are changed in the store panel, and tags and rules in the Google Tag Manager console.
The module has no customer-facing messages of its own - it works in the background. Product list names sent to GA4 are described in Google Analytics 4 - Full Sales Funnel, No Code.
The module doesn't add its own item or customer parameters.
